BIOGRAPHY

Dr Shiell was born in 1938 and was a 1964 graduate of the Melbourne University School of Medicine. He became interested in the newly developed surgical technique of Hair Transplantation and performed the first Australian operation in September 1967.

The procedure met with immediate public acceptance and in 1969, with patients arriving from all over Australia, he set up practice as a full-time specialist in this technique. Overseas travel in 1970 and 1974 enabled him to make contact and exchange ideas with the small number of other hair restoration specialists in the USA and Britain. From 1976 to 1982 he acted as surgical adviser to Britain’s largest chain of hair transplant clinics (Transform Ltd) while continuing to expand his own Australian Clinics in Melbourne and Sydney.

International hair transplantation conferences commenced in the USA from 1975 onwards and Dr Shiell has been an invited speaker and Faculty member at many of these, as well as others in England, Switzerland, Brazil, Spain, Greece, Japan, The Philippines and Malaysia. He is known and respected by his colleagues for his knowledge and wide experience, and he is equally renowned for his willingness to teach and to share his vast experience with other members of his profession. He has been influential in introducing and promoting many new instruments and techniques in the field of Hair Replacement Surgery.

Dr Shiell is co-author of the textbook Hair Transplant Surgery (published in 1984 by Charles C Thomas, Springfield, Illinois) and has contributed chapters to several other books. He has authored many scientific papers and has been a prolific contributor to the specialty journal Hair Transplant Forum since it was founded in 1989. He was the Editor from 1996-98 and Editor Emeritis since 1999.

Dr Shiell was the Foundation President of the Australian Society of Hair Transplant Surgeons in 1984 and a Foundation Member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery in 1993. He has never missed a meeting of either organization and serves on the Website Committee and the Scientific and Education Committees of the International Society. In 1997, in Barcelona, he received the International Society’s Golden Follicle Award for Services to the Profession and in 1999, in San Francisco, the Society presented him with its highest honour, the Manfred Lucas Award.

Dr Shiell was the first Australian to gain admission to the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and a Foundation Member of the Australian College of Cosmetic Surgery. He was also a foundation member of the Australian Hair and Wool Research Society and has been a speaker at the International meetings conducted by the Society in Melbourne and Perth. He is currently the President of that organization

Richard has been married to his wife Patricia for 35 years and has four adult children and 6 grandchildren. His main interests outside the field of medicine are tennis and music. He plays flute and horn in a number of ensembles.
